(Child) Labor Day

On Labor Day, a day rooted in the celebration American workers, we must not forget about the plight of many oft-forgotten workers: children.

Data from the Department of Labor shows a staggering rise in child labor violations over the past decade, an increase of more than 425% from 2013-2023! At the same time that companies are increasingly disregarding labor laws surrounding minors, many state legislatures are weakening them; since 2021, 28 states have introduced legislation to weaken child labor laws, 12 of which passed.

On this day of celebration of American hard-work and industry we must not forget about the strides we have made in improving conditions for the backbone of America and how we’ve fought to keep our children safe and out of exploitative work. For many states are now looking to rollback these vital laws, trading the education and safety of their children in order to irresponsibly address workplace shortages.
